Cupido – Criollo Doble

Size: Doble (5.5 x 50)
Wrapper: Criollo
Strength: Medium – Full
Personal Rating: 8/10
Price: around $3.00 – 4.00

Great smoke, great price, its that simple. I love everything about this stick. Let’s start with the price. For the taste that came out of this thing, its a no brainer. The shape is unique and helps mix things up a bit from the standard robusto, churchill, or torpedo that we are used to. The tapered ends also give this stick a great draw and added complexity to the flavor. The foot had a rich, toasty smell of coffee and earth. Now on to the taste, I love Criollo wrappers, LOVE them. Probably one of my favorites taste wise. This stick is no different. From the moment you torch the foot you get a complex mix of earth, coffee and a slightly sweet……something. Hmmmmm, what exactly is that? Can that be cocoa? Ah yes, just sweet enough to leave that pleasant lingering taste on your lips, but just spicy enough to give you that bold full bodied taste. The flavor stays pretty consistent through out the entire stick. Only complaint is that it burns a little hot once you get down to the nub, but it tastes so darn good that you just don’t want to stop. Copious amounts of full, creamy smoke courtesy of the tapered head and a wonderful floral-esque aroma that fills the room around you. Hey, for a stick that was voted Boutique Premium Cigar of the Year for two consecutive years and that won the Top Medium Bodied Cigar in America Award, how can you go wrong for just under 4 bucks? Enjoy!

Perdomo – Patriarch

Size: Torpedo (6.5 x 54)
Wrapper: Maduro
Strength: Medium
Personal Rating: 5/10
Price: around $8.00

As a tribute to Nick Perdomo Sr., his son, Nick Perdomo Jr. released the Perdomo Patriarch. A blend of Nick Senior’s favorite tobaccos with a maduro or natural wrapper, this cigar is talked about as being one of Perdomo’s masterpieces. Well, I picked up one of these sticks in the maduro wrapper a few weeks ago, and after smoking it, all I have to say is…….meh. This cigar was just not very impressive, with bland flavors, tight draw, and bad construction. The cigar felt way to firm, the wrapper very veiny and not attractive at all. I picked up flavors of coffee, chocolate, and toast. However, all these flavors were very faint and did not really compliment each other. I could see paying maybe around 2-3 dollars for this stick to absently puff on as a daily smoke, but at 8-9 dollars a stick, this just isn’t the best value. This is shocking even to me, seeing as how Perdomo is one of my favorite brands. Give it a try and make your own decision but from my tastes, I just wasn’t impressed.
