your humidor – what you should know

So you bought a box of fine cuban cigars and want to properly store them in a humidor? There’s a few things you need to know about properly storing cigars, any cigars, in your humidor. Here are a few steps to make sure you get the most out of your humidor.

The tools you need…
your humidor, a wash cloth, distilled water, your humidifier and your hydrometer. optional tools – small glass for water

  1. Begin by taking a damp wash cloth and rubbing the inside of the humidor. The wood will absorb the moisture. This will actually save you time with allowing your humidifier to do the job.**important** be sure to use a clean, new would be best, wash cloth.
  2. Now place your humidifier and hydrometer inside the humidor. The humidifier is used to maintain proper humidity. The hydrometer is used to monitor it.
  3. Monitor your hydrometer and once it reaches a range of 72° then you know that your humidor is ready for use.

A few things to take note on…
When you get a new humidor the wood naturally wants to absorb the moister at first. This can make maintaining the humidity a daunting task. So if we immediately start by adding moister to the wood, and allowing it to absorb, it saves us a lot of time and hassle.
Some people allow the wood to absorb by adding a glass filled with water, often a shot glass, in the humidor. This is a definite alternative to using the wash cloth.
Make sure EVERYTHING is clean and only use distilled water. There are chemicals in tap water that can ruin the taste of the cigar.
Everyone has their own preference to humidity percentage. Be sure to, at least, keep it between 65% to 80%. 70% is optimal if you plan to leave them alone for a while.

A few products to consider…

Gurkha – Master’s Select

Size: (6″ x 50) Toro
Wrapper: Natural
Strength: Medium
Personal Rating: 4
Price: $6.00 per stick

Smooth, creamy, and surprising… this is how I would describe this cigar. As always Gurkha has delivered another masterpiece in their cigar lines. There is some spicy to it and it’s pretty strong even though I rated it “Medium”. Newbies beware, this cigar is not for you but man oh man for you seasoned smokers out there I recommend this one.
